What does Windows error code 1166 (ERROR_DEVICE_DOOR_OPEN) mean?

ERROR_DEVICE_DOOR_OPEN

The device enclosure door is open.

ERROR_DEVICE_DOOR_OPEN is decimal 1166 (0x48E). A changer, tape library, or other removable-media device reports an open door or enclosure state that prevents normal operation. The interlock protects operators and robotics; software should not attempt to bypass it with repeated commands.

Events that commonly lead to 1166

Immediate handling

Pause robotics and media jobs, show an operator-facing message that identifies the physical library, and wait for an explicit door-closed/readiness transition. A tight retry loop can flood logs and compete with the device's own initialization after the enclosure closes.

Telemetry and audit trail

Opening a door can invalidate assumptions about every accessible slot, not only the element involved in the command that returned 1166. Physical cartridges may have been moved manually.

Recovery after closure

If the door is visibly closed but the code persists, treat it as a sensor, latch, cabling, or firmware issue and follow the hardware service procedure. Rebooting management software cannot repair a mechanical interlock.

Developer guidance

Represent door-open as a device-wide unavailable state and coalesce repeated reports into one incident. UI and telemetry should distinguish “operator servicing” from “door unexpectedly open,” while the command layer should reject new robotic work until reconciliation completes.

Difference from related device states

ERROR_MAGAZINE_NOT_PRESENT identifies a missing removable magazine and may remain after the door closes. ERROR_DEVICE_REINITIALIZATION_NEEDED says hardware state must be rebuilt. ERROR_NOT_READY is broader. Error 1166 specifically identifies the open-door condition.

Example

An operator opens a library to replace a magazine while a backup scheduler still queues load commands. The first command receives 1166. The controller pauses the queue, records the maintenance window, waits for door closure, inventories the library, and only then recalculates cartridge locations before restarting jobs.
