EPFNOSUPPORT
Protocol family is a separate compatibility dimension
EPFNOSUPPORT is Solaris errno 123. Oracle describes a protocol family that is not configured or implemented and notes its historical use for Internet protocols. The family identifies a communications namespace; it is not the same question as whether one protocol is present or whether a socket type is valid.
Nearby errors separate those axes: EPROTONOSUPPORT concerns the protocol implementation, ESOCKTNOSUPPORT concerns socket type, and EAFNOSUPPORT concerns an address incompatible with the requested protocol family. Modern POSIX socket() documents the domain/address-family argument and allows implementation-specific supported families.
Debug the requested family first
- Log the family/domain value before wrappers or language runtimes translate it.
- Check the platform headers and the component's family-registration or provider configuration rather than changing remote addresses.
- When porting code, do not assume a family available on Linux or BSD exists under the same contract on Solaris.
