ERROR_MCA_UNSUPPORTED_COLOR_TEMPERATURE

This is a hardware-control failure

ERROR_MCA_UNSUPPORTED_COLOR_TEMPERATURE is returned in the Monitor Configuration API path when SetMonitorColorTemperature is asked to use a preset that the current physical monitor does not support. It concerns DDC/CI and MCCS monitor controls, not an ICC profile, Windows Night light, application color management, or a GPU color transform.

Ask the monitor before requesting a preset

The intended sequence is to call GetMonitorCapabilities for the physical monitor handle and examine both its capability flags and the supported-color-temperature mask. Only then should an application call SetMonitorColorTemperature with one of the documented presets. A missing capability is different from a valid capability whose accepted preset set is smaller than the application expected.

Common diagnostic mistakes

Do not work around this by sending arbitrary VCP writes. Microsoft cautions that many displays do not fully implement MCCS, so a command that is accepted by one monitor can have undefined behavior on another.
