ERROR_STATE_WRITE_SETTING_FAILED
A state setting could not be written
ERROR_STATE_WRITE_SETTING_FAILED reports that a value update was not committed. The in-memory application state may therefore differ from what will be seen after restart.
Common causes
- Disk space, quota, or repository availability problems.
- The value is incompatible with the expected type or schema.
- Another writer changes or locks the same container.
- Policy or access control makes the scope read-only.
Recommended diagnostics
Record the value type and size without logging sensitive contents. Confirm whether a transaction was rolled back and whether a subsequent read returns the old or new value.
Application behavior
Do not report “saved” until persistence succeeds. Keep retry logic bounded and surface a clear warning when user changes remain only in memory.
Consistency with the UI
If a save operation fails, keep the interface from implying that the change is durable. Either revert the displayed value, mark it as unsaved, or keep a pending state that the user can retry explicitly.
Reliability testing
Test full disks, quota exhaustion, read-only profiles, process termination during commit, and simultaneous writers. The expected result should be either the complete old value or the complete new value, never a partially encoded record.
