ERROR_PRINTER_DRIVER_ALREADY_INSTALLED
Printer driver installation is managed by the print server, and driver identity must be interpreted together with the target server and environment. An installer that unconditionally repeats an add operation can receive this status even though printing itself is healthy.
The right response is usually reconciliation, not file copying. Enumerate the server's installed printer drivers and compare the existing driver metadata with the version or package your deployment expected. Modern Windows documentation recommends package-based installation rather than treating a driver as an arbitrary set of DLLs copied into spooler directories.
Before replacing anything
- Record server name, driver name, architecture/environment, version, and package path.
- Use EnumPrinterDrivers or equivalent management tooling to confirm what is registered.
- If this was an upgrade, use an upgrade-aware installation path instead of retrying the same add call.
- Do not delete an existing driver merely because the add call was not idempotent; first determine which queues depend on it.
