ERROR_SEEK

The requested seek could not be completed

ERROR_SEEK means the device failed while locating a track, area, or position required by the operation. On modern systems it usually points to a storage, controller, media, or raw-offset problem rather than an ordinary file-pointer validation error.

Diagnostic steps

Handling

A transient retry may be reasonable once, but persistent seek failures should be treated as possible hardware degradation. Copy readable data to healthy storage and avoid repeated writes to suspect media. Raw-disk applications should recheck every offset calculation before blaming the device.
