ERROR_PRINTER_DRIVER_DOWNLOAD_NEEDED
Remote printer use includes a driver-distribution problem in addition to queue discovery. Windows provides package upload and package installation APIs for print servers, and client/server printing has historically supported obtaining the printer driver associated with a shared queue.
This code is therefore different from ERROR_UNKNOWN_PRINTER_DRIVER. An unknown driver cannot be resolved as a registered driver by the print subsystem; here the required driver has been identified but is absent on the system that needs to use it and must be downloaded through the deployment path.
Verify the distribution chain
- Record the shared queue, print server, exact driver name, target environment, and client Windows version.
- Confirm that the server has published or staged the intended driver package and that the client is resolving the same driver identity.
- Check package trust and remote-install policy instead of copying individual driver DLLs to the client.
- For Samba print servers, compare the queue's assigned Windows driver with the contents and permissions of the print-driver distribution setup; Samba documents automatic driver download as a separate server configuration task.
