EL2HLT
A legacy level-state errno, not a generic device failure
EL2HLT belongs to a block of historical System V error numbers that Solaris and illumos preserve in the errno ABI. Oracle's current errno catalog names the condition as Level 2 halted
but does not assign it to a modern Solaris system call. POSIX Issue 8 does not define this name.
The important distinction is the level number and state: this result says level 2 is halted. It is not the same value as EL3HLT for level 3, or EL2NSYNC for a level-2 synchronization state. Code that collapses these names to a generic I/O error loses the only structured information the legacy status carries.
How to investigate a reported the result
- Capture the exact API, driver, protocol adapter, or imported UNIX component that produced errno 44; the symbolic name alone does not identify a current Solaris subsystem.
- Check whether the value crossed an RPC, binary log, compatibility shim, or foreign errno translation table. Numeric errno values are not portable between unrelated operating systems.
- Preserve this result in diagnostics and compare it with adjacent level-state codes before deciding whether retry or reinitialization is meaningful.
