EL2HLT

A legacy level-state errno, not a generic device failure

EL2HLT belongs to a block of historical System V error numbers that Solaris and illumos preserve in the errno ABI. Oracle's current errno catalog names the condition as Level 2 halted but does not assign it to a modern Solaris system call. POSIX Issue 8 does not define this name.

The important distinction is the level number and state: this result says level 2 is halted. It is not the same value as EL3HLT for level 3, or EL2NSYNC for a level-2 synchronization state. Code that collapses these names to a generic I/O error loses the only structured information the legacy status carries.
