ERROR_PNP_QUERY_REMOVE_UNRELATED_DEVICE_TIMEOUT

PnP coordination reached another device stack and that stack did not respond in time

This status records a timeout in a device stack classified as unrelated to the primary target of the PnP operation. Windows can still touch multiple stacks during reconfiguration because installation, resource rebalance, or system-level device changes may trigger broader PnP work. The important fact is that the stack which timed out is not the normal child or removal-relation path of the requested device.

Treat the initiating device as context, not automatically as the faulting hardware. Correlate timestamps across PnP events and SetupAPI.dev.log, then identify the other stack that was processing a query-remove request at the same time. A driver that blocks its PnP dispatch path can delay operations elsewhere even when there is no direct device relationship. Rebooting can clear the pending state, but repeated occurrences call for stack-level tracing of the device named in the timeout event.

What to inspect

  • Correlate the failure with concurrent device installs, disables, and updates.
  • Inspect PnP logs for the other devnode involved at the same timestamp.
  • Trace long-running DispatchPnP or framework PnP callbacks in that stack.
