ERROR_SYSTEM_HIVE_TOO_LARGE
The SYSTEM hive is too large for the operation
The SYSTEM hive contains configuration that is critical during boot, including control sets and the Services tree used for drivers and Win32 services. This error is more specific than a general registry-space failure: it identifies the SYSTEM hive as having exceeded a size limit relevant to the current Windows path.
Inspect growth beneath configuration-heavy areas rather than deleting arbitrary registry data. The Services tree can accumulate driver and service entries, while device and control configuration can also expand over time. Compare the hive with a known-good system or earlier backup and identify which application, installer, management agent, or driver owns unusually large branches. Because the hive participates in boot and LastKnownGood control-set processing, an offline backup should be made before structural cleanup. Deleting unknown keys can turn a size problem into an unbootable configuration.
What to inspect
- Measure the SYSTEM hive and locate unusually large branches or repeated subkeys.
- Map suspicious keys to the service, driver, or provisioning component that owns them.
- Back up the hive before any offline cleanup or restore operation.
