ERROR_BUFFER_ALL_ZEROS identifies this condition: This result is used when a component detects that the supplied or produced buffer has no nonzero data. Depending on the API, that may be a valid optimization signal, a sparse-data condition, or evidence that an expected producer never populated the buffer.

  • buffer length and alignment.
  • whether the buffer was initialized before the call.
  • producer return value and bytes-written count.
  • a bounded hexadecimal sample and checksum rather than the entire potentially sensitive buffer.

Handling and recovery

Interpret the result according to the API contract. Zero-filled data may be accepted, encoded efficiently, or rejected if a header or payload was required. Fix producer sequencing when the buffer should have contained data; do not replace zeros with fabricated content.

Common misinterpretation

An all-zero buffer is not automatically an allocation failure. Newly committed memory is intentionally zeroed, and sparse storage can legitimately return zeroes for unallocated ranges.
