ERROR_DS_OBJ_CLASS_NOT_SUBCLASS
The class hierarchy does not contain the required parent
ERROR_DS_OBJ_CLASS_NOT_SUBCLASS reports an invalid inheritance relationship in the Active Directory schema. It is about the subClassOf chain, not merely whether two class names exist. A class can be defined and still fail an operation that requires it to be derived from a particular structural or abstract parent.
It is often exposed by schema-extension installers that target the wrong base class, use a class intended for an earlier product version, or try to attach an auxiliary capability where a structural inheritance relationship is required.
Checks with the highest value
- Read the
subClassOfvalue of the candidateclassSchemaobject and follow the full inherited chain, not only the immediate parent. - Confirm the class category: structural, abstract, and auxiliary classes have different roles in an AD schema.
- Verify that the required parent class is present and active before importing the dependent class definition.
- Review the product's schema version and its documented base class; changing
subClassOfafter a class has been deployed is not a casual repair.
Why an attribute change cannot correct it
Adding mayContain values changes the set of optional attributes but does not create an inheritance relationship. The correction belongs in the class definition and its deployment order.
