ERROR_DS_NCNAME_MISSING_CR_REF
NC data and crossRef metadata are out of agreement
A naming context and the crossRef that describes it serve different purposes. The NC is a replicated object tree; the crossRef resides in the configuration NC Partitions container and records properties of that partition. This error exposes a mismatch between those layers rather than a simple malformed DN.
The mismatch can matter forest-wide because the configuration NC distributes partition metadata to domain controllers. Before repairing anything, establish whether the NC is expected to exist, whether creation or removal was interrupted, and whether all DCs have converged on the same Partitions-container state.
What to inspect
- Capture the NC DN and locate any crossRef with matching
nCNameor DNS-root information. - Run replication diagnostics for the configuration NC and compare the Partitions container on multiple healthy DCs.
- Avoid manually manufacturing a crossRef from the NC DN alone; role-owner processing and partition lifecycle rules also apply.
