ERESTART
ERESTART is a low-level Linux restart indication, not a normal application-level recovery code. The UAPI header labels it as an interrupted system call that should be restarted. If it appears in traces, the important context is signal handling and syscall restart logic.
User-space code normally sees either a completed syscall or a public errno such as EINTR, not the internal restart decision itself. A debugger, tracer, or kernel-facing component can still expose restart names while the kernel is deciding whether to replay the syscall or report interruption.
Diagnostic focus
- Which syscall was interrupted and whether it is restartable.
- Which signal was pending and whether a handler ran.
- Whether the handler was installed with
SA_RESTART. - Whether a tracer is observing syscall-exit state before user-space receives the final result.
