ERROR_DS_CROSS_REF_BUSY
The crossRef is locally busy with a conflicting partition operation
Forest partition metadata is serialized around crossRef objects and Domain Naming Master processing. This status indicates a local conflict involving the same cross-reference name while another operation is using it. It is different from a permanent duplicate crossRef: the emphasis is on an in-progress or locally active operation.
Partition creation, removal, and remote crossRef coordination are not ordinary concurrent LDAP updates. A deployment system that immediately starts a second operation after a timeout may race the first request, especially when the client timed out before the directory completed its server-side work.
What to inspect
- Correlate timestamps and operation IDs to determine whether another NC create/delete or crossRef request is still active.
- Check the Domain Naming Master and configuration-NC replication before issuing a compensating operation.
- After the active operation settles, re-read the Partitions container and decide from actual crossRef state whether a retry is still required.
