ERROR_DS_NO_SERVER_OBJECT
A domain controller no longer has the expected server object in configuration metadata
A domain controller is represented in the Configuration naming context by site and server metadata together with an NTDS Settings object. Microsoft describes the NTDS Settings object as one of the critical objects distinguishing a DC from an ordinary computer account. Missing server-side configuration metadata breaks operations that need to identify the DSA in topology or replication.
Check Active Directory Sites and Services and the Configuration NC for the expected server and NTDS Settings objects. Determine whether a failed demotion, unsupported manual deletion, or incomplete metadata cleanup removed only part of the DC identity. Do not recreate arbitrary objects with the same name as a repair shortcut; supported metadata cleanup or reinstallation of the affected AD DS/AD LDS instance is safer when the configuration-set identity is incomplete.
What to inspect
- Verify the server object under the expected site and its NTDS Settings child.
- Check whether the DC was forcibly removed or partially cleaned from directory metadata.
- Use supported metadata cleanup before reusing the server name for a new DC.
