DNS_ERROR_DS_UNAVAILABLE

Directory-backed DNS storage is unavailable

Active Directory-integrated DNS zones are stored in AD DS and replicated through directory replication rather than ordinary DNS zone-transfer topology. MS-DNSP describes DNS Server using LDAP operations to load and modify dnsZone and dnsNode objects in application directory partitions. When the directory path is unavailable, a directory-backed management change cannot be committed normally.

Check local AD DS service health, LDAP connectivity, DC role state, and the DNS application partition involved. The DNS service can sometimes continue initialization or answer from previously loaded state while a particular directory operation fails, so successful queries do not prove the directory write path is healthy. Diagnose directory availability before recreating the DNS zone or converting it to file-backed storage.
