WU_E_UNKNOWN_SERVICE means the update service selected by the caller is not registered with Automatic Updates anymore. A stale service ID, removed WSUS registration, or policy change can cause this.
What to check
- Verify the effective Windows Update and WSUS policy on the device.
- Refresh service registration and avoid reusing a service ID that came from an earlier configuration.
- Check whether the device was switched between Microsoft Update, WSUS, or another managed update source.
