NS_E_PDA_OBSOLETE_SP
How to investigate NS_E_PDA_OBSOLETE_SP
The code 0xC00D118E narrows the event to loading a device service provider too old for the required Player operation. Retain the first lower-level error.
What the Player is doing
A device shown in Explorer can still disappear from the Player’s WMDM session or reject a media format, filename, directory operation or storage request. A realistic trigger is that the provider exposes legacy interfaces but not the version needed for synchronization.
Capture before changing state
| Evidence | Why it matters for obsolete sp |
|---|---|
| Producing object and operation | PnP instance and interface path, WMDM service-provider CLSID, device/partnership ID, connection generation, storage object and capacity, format-support result, firmware version, operation callback and first device or transport HRESULT |
| Key observation | service-provider CLSID/version, requested interface and QueryInterface result |
| Controlled comparison | Repeat the producing call after changing only this condition: install updated device software/service provider or use supported basic operations. |
Five-step isolation test
- Capture
0xC00D118E, the exact Player/API operation and the first timestamp at which it appears. - Save service-provider CLSID/version, requested interface and QueryInterface result; do this before ejecting media, reconnecting a device, canceling a job or rebuilding the Player object.
- Correlate the result with PnP instance and interface path, WMDM service-provider CLSID, device/partnership ID, connection generation, storage object and capacity, format-support result, firmware version, operation callback and first device or transport HRESULT.
- Reproduce once with the original source and destination, then apply only this change: install updated device software/service provider or use supported basic operations.
Different conditions in the same family
| Related result | Different condition |
|---|---|
NS_E_PDA_INITIALIZINGDEVICES | requesting device work while the Player is still constructing the device collection |
NS_E_PDA_TITLE_COLLISION | creating a device media object whose title/name conflicts under device rules |
NS_E_PDA_DEVICESUPPORTDISABLED | checking Player or policy state that disables portable-device support |
Correction criteria
The test is successful when you install updated device software/service provider or use supported basic operations, recreate the owning operation, and the original call no longer returns it.
During verification, do not assume the old interface pointer remains valid after reconnect; Re-enumerate the device and storage objects and correlate the failure with the same connection generation.
