ERROR_VOLUME_CONTAINS_SYS_FILES

Windows is actively using system files on this volume

A physical eject or destructive media-management operation cannot safely proceed while the volume hosts files used by the operating system, such as paging or other system-managed files. This state is outside ordinary RSM allocation: even if the cartridge is known and the library can move it, Windows still has a system dependency on the mounted volume.

Identify which system component placed files on the volume and move or disable that configuration through the appropriate Windows settings. Reboot if required to release paging or system-file use, then dismount and eject through RSM. Force removal risks system instability or data loss and should not be treated as a normal retry path.

What to inspect

  • Inspect paging-file and system-volume configuration.
  • Confirm all system dependencies are removed before dismount.
  • Reboot when Windows cannot release the volume dynamically.
