What does HRESULT 0x00042802 (VDS_S_ISCSI_LOGIN_ALREAD_EXISTS) mean?

VDS_S_ISCSI_LOGIN_ALREAD_EXISTS

This informational status means the requested login would duplicate an existing target session under the selected login conditions. VDS login is parameterized by target, target portal, initiator portal, login type, digest choices, authentication type, and login flags. The fact that a target is already reachable can therefore be the expected state rather than a transport failure.

Why this state matters

Multipath is the important exception. The VDS login flag documentation says that VDS_ILF_MULTIPATH_ENABLED allows a new login session even when a session to the target already exists, and warns that multipathing software must be present. Do not blindly retry without understanding whether the application intended one session or another MPIO path.
