E_ADS_CANT_CONVERT_DATATYPE
E_ADS_CANT_CONVERT_DATATYPE is a type-mapping failure. ADSI defines its own attribute syntaxes and maps them to native directory syntaxes; the error can therefore result from the wrong VARIANT/value representation or from insufficient schema information needed to perform the conversion.
Inspect schema syntax and the exact value representation
- Resolve the attribute schema and identify the expected ADSI syntax such as
ADSTYPE_DN_STRING, integer, octet string, or provider-specific data. - Log the VARIANT type and, for multi-valued operations, whether the caller supplied the array form expected by the ADSI method.
- Do not stringify binary, GUID, security-descriptor, or large-integer values merely to make a write call compile.
Microsoft explicitly states that each directory attribute has an associated syntax and that ADSI maps native syntax into ADSI types. This is why the same textual representation is not automatically valid for every attribute. If schema metadata is unavailable, type conversion can also fail even when the logical value looks correct. Compare the value path against a schema-aware read of the same attribute on a known object.
