VDS_E_MISSING_DISK
VDS_E_MISSING_DISK means the storage layout expects a disk that is no longer available to Windows. It can be an unplugged disk, an unavailable SAN LUN, a detached virtual disk, or a failed member of a multi-disk volume.
What to check
- Check physical connections, controller paths, SAN presentation, and virtual-disk attachment state.
- Identify whether the missing disk belongs to a dynamic, spanned, mirrored, or other multi-disk layout.
- Do not initialize a replacement disk as a substitute until the recovery or rebuild plan is clear.
Virtual Disk Service is a legacy COM API. On Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 and later, inspect and manage supported storage through the Storage Management API and the Storage PowerShell cmdlets.
