VDS_E_BAD_BOOT_DISK
This code is tied to dynamic-pack activation. The VDS volume-status rules depend on the containing pack: an offline pack makes its volumes unavailable, and dynamic volumes derive availability from member disks and plex state. A failure on the boot disk while the driver onlines the pack is therefore both a storage-health problem and a boot-critical event.
Why this state matters
Do not start by editing BCD. First establish whether the boot disk is readable, online, and returning stable I/O, and whether the dynamic pack has valid configuration information. Query disk and pack state and collect volume-manager driver events. Boot repair is relevant only after the storage layer can present the boot volume consistently; a perfect BCD store cannot compensate for a pack that the driver cannot online.
Diagnostic focus
- Collect storage and volume-manager driver errors from the pack-online attempt.
- Check the boot disk for I/O failures and confirm that its dynamic-disk metadata is readable.
- Requery pack and volume status rather than inferring state from an existing drive letter.
- Delay BCD repair until the boot volume is stably presented by the storage stack.
