VDS_E_ISCSI_LOGOUT_INCOMPLETE
This status is explicitly a partial result. VDS LogoutFromTarget applies to all iSCSI sessions for the specified target, and the common return-code documentation distinguishes an incomplete logout from a general logout failure. Some sessions may already be gone when this HRESULT is reported.
Why this state matters
That means retry logic must start from the post-operation session set. Replaying teardown against assumptions captured before the call can hide the specific path that remained. In multipath deployments, the surviving session may correspond to one initiator portal or target portal while other paths closed normally.
Diagnostic focus
- Wait for the asynchronous logout to complete, then enumerate the target sessions and identify exactly which endpoints remain.
- Correlate remaining sessions with MPIO/path policy and active storage use before forcing another teardown.
- Compare initiator and target portal addresses for the failed sessions; one path can have different network or authentication state from the others.
- Retry only the remaining management work and preserve per-session lower-layer errors when the initiator service reports them.
