VDS_E_NO_VOLUME_PATHNAME
This status is the volume-side counterpart of a disk pathname failure. VDS manages a volume object separately from its access paths such as drive letters or mounted folders. A volume GUID is exposed in VDS_VOLUME_PROP2, while file-system and access-path methods operate through the volume management interfaces. Failure to retrieve the volume pathname therefore does not mean that a particular drive letter is missing.
Why this state matters
Diagnostics should first identify the volume by its VDS object and GUID and then examine its mount and Plug and Play state. Reassigning a drive letter is not a general fix: drive letters are access paths layered on top of a volume device. If VDS cannot resolve the underlying pathname, methods that need the device identity can fail before access-path policy is even considered.
Diagnostic focus
- Record the VDS volume ID and the GUIDs returned in
VDS_VOLUME_PROP2. - Query current access paths separately so a missing drive letter is not confused with failure to resolve the volume device.
- Correlate recent volume arrival/removal events and refresh the VDS view before reusing a long-lived COM object.
- Preserve the first HRESULT from pathname resolution instead of overwriting it with a later mount-point or format failure.
