What does HRESULT 0x80042924 (VDS_E_RAID5_NOT_SUPPORTED) mean?

VDS_E_RAID5_NOT_SUPPORTED

RAID-5 in VDS is the striped-with-parity dynamic-volume type. The service exposes a distinct VDS_SVF_SUPPORT_RAID5 capability flag, separate from mirror support. IVdsPack::CreateVolume also describes RAID-5 as a multi-column volume type and notes that fault-tolerant binding is platform-dependent. This HRESULT is therefore a capability gate rather than a failed parity calculation.

Why this state matters

Check service flags and operating-system support before analyzing disks. Hardware arrays that present a RAID-5 LUN as one disk are a different layer and do not imply VDS software RAID-5 support. Likewise, modern Storage Spaces parity is not the same VDS volume type. The caller should choose a storage technology supported by the platform instead of repeatedly submitting the same VDS binding request.
