VDS_E_OFFLINE_NOT_SUPPORTED
VDS_E_OFFLINE_NOT_SUPPORTED means the volume implementation cannot be taken offline through the requested VDS path. In VDS terminology, a volume is normally made unavailable by a permanent dismount, which is different from repairing a dynamic volume through the misleadingly named IVdsVolumeOnline interface.
Identify the exact object and offline mechanism
- Confirm that the target is a volume and not the containing physical disk.
- Enumerate access paths and open usage before requesting a permanent dismount.
- Use disk online/offline APIs only when the management goal is to change the entire disk state.
Removing a drive letter is not equivalent to offlining the volume, because other mount points or volume-GUID paths can remain. Likewise, repeatedly forcing dismount cannot add support that the provider does not implement. Report the volume type, provider and existing access paths so the caller can select an appropriate maintenance workflow.
