What does HRESULT 0x8004292D (VDS_E_VD_DISK_IS_COMPACTING) mean?

VDS_E_VD_DISK_IS_COMPACTING

VDS uses VDS_VST_COMPACTING while a compact operation reduces the physical size of a virtual-disk backing file. This HRESULT is returned to another operation that cannot run while that transition is active. It does not say that compaction failed or that the guest filesystem itself is being compressed.

Why this state matters

Compaction is an asynchronous virtual-disk metadata/storage operation. VDS permits compact on a detached disk and also on an attached disk that has been opened; the detailed state path differs for those cases. Diagnostics should therefore preserve both whether the disk is attached and the active compaction result rather than simply retrying a conflicting method.
