The data is not a correctly formatted cryptographic message. It may be unrelated data, corrupted CMS/PKCS#7 content, or a message decoded with the wrong expected format.
What to check
- Verify the content type, original byte length, and transfer encoding before passing the blob to CryptoAPI.
- Check whether a gateway, mail client, archive tool, or text conversion altered the binary message.
- Do not attempt decryption or signature verification until the message can be decoded successfully.
