STATUS_INVALID_VOLUME_LABEL
The volume label is not valid for this volume
Volume labels have file-system-specific maximum lengths and character restrictions. A label acceptable on NTFS may be rejected on FAT-family media, and raw user input can contain trailing spaces, control characters, or reserved characters not visible in a UI.
Validate against the actual target volume rather than applying ordinary filename rules. Encoding and normalization also matter when labels are transferred between APIs or systems.
What to inspect
- Query the file-system name and existing label with GetVolumeInformation.
- Log the code points and length after trimming or normalization.
- Apply the target file system’s label rules before calling SetVolumeLabel.
