STATUS_FS_DRIVER_REQUIRED
The storage device is reachable, but its file-system implementation is unavailable
STATUS_FS_DRIVER_REQUIRED separates volume access from file-system availability. Windows has reached a volume for which a file-system driver is needed, but that driver has not yet been loaded. This is not the same as proving the medium is RAW or that the on-disk data is corrupt.
Windows supports file systems that can be loaded by a file-system recognizer or on demand. Microsoft documents several file systems whose normal service configuration relies on recognition-driven loading rather than ordinary boot loading. File-system recognition can also distinguish a valid but unsupported layout from a truly unrecognized RAW volume when the appropriate recognition structure is present.
What to inspect
- The volume identity and the file-system format that is expected to own it.
- The file-system driver's service configuration, image path, start type and load failure events.
- Code Integrity or driver-loading errors that occurred before the volume access returned this status.
- Recognition results before running format or repair tools; do not convert an unavailable driver into an assumed media-corruption diagnosis.
If a third-party file system is involved, verify that its driver package supports the running Windows build and architecture. Reformatting the volume removes evidence and is not a substitute for establishing whether the required file-system driver is simply absent, blocked or failing to load.
