STATUS_SHORT_NAMES_NOT_ENABLED_ON_VOLUME
The requested short-name operation is disabled on this volume
NTFS short names are a compatibility feature, not a guaranteed alias for every long filename. Their creation can be disabled globally or per volume, and existing names may differ from names generated on another system.
Software should use the long path returned by modern APIs. Enabling 8.3 creation solely to satisfy one component can add directory-update overhead and does not retroactively create aliases for every existing file.
What to inspect
- Check the volume’s 8.3 name-creation policy and whether the specific file already has a short name.
- Find the component that still requires DOS-style naming instead of synthesizing an alias.
- Use long-path-capable APIs or update the compatibility dependency before changing volume policy.
