STATUS_WMI_SET_FAILURE
The WMI provider failed while changing its data
Unlike STATUS_WMI_READ_ONLY, this status indicates that a change operation is meaningful for the selected block or item but the provider could not complete it. The failure can depend on device state, validation performed by the provider, or a lower-level operation required to commit the new value.
Preserve the input payload and query the value again after failure; do not assume a transactional rollback unless the provider documents one. The provider's own tracing is usually more informative than the generic WMI status because the public code does not encode the failed field or hardware operation.
What to inspect
- Record the old value, requested value, GUID, instance, and item ID.
- Collect provider or driver tracing around the set request.
- Read the value back before deciding whether to retry or compensate.
