STATUS_DIRECTORY_NOT_SUPPORTED
The target object type is unsupported by this operation
Directory handles are valid for many metadata and enumeration APIs, but they do not expose a normal unnamed data stream like a regular file. A control code that transforms file contents or extents can therefore reject a directory even when the handle was opened correctly.
Do not replace this with a file-only open flag and expect success. The caller must decide whether it intended to operate on directory metadata, children, or a regular file selected incorrectly.
What to inspect
- Log the target type and the exact FSCTL or information class.
- For recursive tools, apply file operations only to regular files and handle directory metadata separately.
- Check reparse points because a path that appears directory-like can redirect to another object type.
