STATUS_SMB1_NOT_AVAILABLE
STATUS_SMB1_NOT_AVAILABLE is a security and interoperability result, not a generic network outage. The client reached a share that requires SMB1, while the client policy requires SMB2 or newer. The durable remediation is to modernize the server or appliance protocol support, not to treat the code as a share-name error.
How to narrow it down
Collect the negotiated or attempted dialect, server implementation and the reason the server cannot offer SMB2+. SMB security guidance treats SMB1 as obsolete and recommends disabling it when possible. Enabling an obsolete dialect as a broad workaround weakens the environment and can obscure the real compatibility gap.
Use a protocol-aware test client only to identify the server's capabilities. Do not leave a weaker protocol setting enabled after the diagnostic test unless it is an explicit, reviewed compatibility decision.
Evidence that matters
- Identify the server or appliance firmware and its supported SMB dialects.
- Confirm whether a client policy blocks SMB1 or the server only offers SMB1.
- Plan a server-side protocol upgrade or replacement rather than broad SMB1 re-enablement.
