STATUS_SMR_GARBAGE_COLLECTION_REQUIRED
The zoned or SMR volume needs space reclamation
Shingled Magnetic Recording devices commonly expose zones that must be written sequentially. Previously written space cannot always be overwritten in place; zones must be reclaimed or reset before they can accept new data. This status reports that the volume requires garbage collection.
Ordinary file defragmentation is not a substitute for the storage stack or device-specific reclamation process. Check free zones, write-pointer state, and whether the volume maintenance task is disabled or starved by workload.
What to inspect
- Allow the supported volume maintenance or garbage-collection operation to run.
- Check device health and available empty zones.
- Avoid forcing random overwrite patterns that increase reclamation pressure.
