STATUS_GRAPHICS_STALE_MODESET
The handle once worked, but no longer names current state
A stale mode set is not necessarily invalid in the abstract. It was acquired from a VidPN object whose generation changed before the caller used it. The service expects the driver to reacquire the current mode set rather than continue with cached descriptors.
Topology changes, mode-set replacement during cofunctional enumeration, hot-plug events, and competing display operations can all invalidate a previously acquired view. Reusing it risks making decisions from an old capability list.
Recovery pattern
- Discard the stale mode-set handle and reacquire the appropriate source or target mode set through the current VidPN interface.
- Re-run the operation using the new generation rather than applying a partial patch to cached modes.
- Log the generation boundary and callback sequence that caused the set to change.
