ERROR_GRAPHICS_INVALID_TOTAL_REGION
ERROR_GRAPHICS_INVALID_TOTAL_REGION (0xC026230C) means the full scan region in a requested video signal is invalid. The total region includes both active picture data and blanking; it defines the cadence that the pixel clock must drive.
Why total timing is independent
Two modes can share the same visible resolution while using different blanking and therefore different pixel clocks or refresh behavior. For a valid signal, the total horizontal and vertical dimensions must accommodate the active region and remain coherent with the frequency fields and the output capability being described.
Common failure patterns
- A detailed timing is copied with only the active fields changed, leaving totals from a different resolution or refresh rate.
- A scaling or reduced-blanking calculation updates the visible size but not the horizontal or vertical totals.
- Packed EDID timing fields are decoded incorrectly, producing totals smaller than the active size or an implausible blanking interval.
- A clone topology attempts to retain a target timing that is no longer cofunctional with the pinned source mode.
What to preserve in diagnostics
Record the complete timing tuple: active width and height, total width and height, pixel rate, and requested refresh behavior. A screenshot of the desktop resolution alone usually cannot distinguish an invalid total region from a monitor rejection or a bandwidth limitation.
