STATUS_PCP_AUTHENTICATION_FAILED
The provider rejected authorization for this object
STATUS_PCP_AUTHENTICATION_FAILED means that PCP reached a TPM-backed object but the authorization required to use it was not accepted. The failure is about access to that particular provider object; it does not prove that the key is absent, corrupted, or unsupported.
Do not confuse this result with STATUS_PCP_AUTHENTICATION_IGNORED. A failed authorization is a normal denial for the current attempt. An ignored authorization is the anti-hammering case where the device deliberately stops evaluating attempts to slow guessing attacks.
What to check
- Identify which key, profile, policy, or application identity the request uses, and verify that the request is operating in the expected user or machine context.
- Preserve the first failure and the request sequence. Repeating guesses can move the TPM toward a global dictionary-attack lockout.
- For managed credentials, investigate the intended enrollment or recovery workflow instead of replacing the key with a software key solely to suppress the error.
