ERROR_VMCOMPUTE_UNKNOWN_MESSAGE
The control channel delivered a message outside the understood protocol
ERROR_VMCOMPUTE_UNKNOWN_MESSAGE is a protocol interpretation failure inside the Hyper-V compute stack. The transport delivered data, but the receiving Host or Guest Compute Service did not recognize the message type expected for that protocol version.
This is materially different from invalid application JSON supplied to HcsCreateComputeSystem. It points toward mismatched host/guest components, an unsupported utility-VM image, damaged control data or a software defect in the compute-service path.
Evidence and corrective action
- Record host build, container base-image build and utility-VM component versions.
- Preserve the complete HCS error record instead of translating it to a generic container-runtime message.
- Check whether the issue follows one image family or affects every Hyper-V-isolated workload.
- Update host and image components as a supported set rather than replacing individual binaries.
- Do not troubleshoot external DNS or container ports until the internal compute protocol succeeds.
