ERROR_VMCOMPUTE_UNSUPPORTED_PROTOCOL_VERSION
Both ends understand the protocol family but not a common version
ERROR_VMCOMPUTE_UNSUPPORTED_PROTOCOL_VERSION identifies a version-negotiation failure between Hyper-V Host Compute Service components and the guest compute service. Unlike an unknown-message result, the protocol framing is recognizable but its declared version is unsupported.
The practical unit of servicing is the compatible host, utility VM and image stack. Copying a guest service binary from another image or mixing layer data from different Windows releases can create combinations that were never designed to communicate.
Evidence and corrective action
- Compare exact Windows build numbers and container image tags, including the base layer rather than only the final application tag.
- Confirm that the runtime did not reuse a stale utility VM or layer cache after an upgrade.
- Use supported image/host combinations and rebuild derived images from a current base.
- Avoid manual replacement of compute-service binaries inside an image.
- Capture whether process isolation works while Hyper-V isolation fails; that difference narrows the protocol path involved.
