In finite-field arithmetic, not every value has a square root modulo the selected modulus. This status is used when a square-root operation is requested for a value that is a quadratic non-residue in that field.
For elliptic-curve and modular-code paths, this usually means the point decompression, field element validation or test vector is inconsistent with the curve parameters, rather than a buffer-size problem.

- Whether the input value was reduced into the field before the square-root call.
- Compressed ECC points and test vectors that may belong to another curve.
