ERROR_PATCH_PACKAGE_INVALID
A patch package has its own structured format
ERROR_PATCH_PACKAGE_INVALID (1636) means Windows Installer could read the file but could not process it as a valid MSP. A patch package contains Summary Information, embedded transforms, patch metadata, and usually cabinet content; renaming another file to .msp or truncating the download cannot satisfy that structure.
This result is different from a valid patch that does not apply to the installed product. Applicability errors occur after the package has been parsed and its target information can be evaluated.
Validation checks
- Compare the patch hash and digital signature with the publisher's release.
- Confirm that an HTTP error page or proxy response was not saved as the MSP.
- Inspect the patch Summary Information and embedded transform metadata.
- Use Installer SDK tools to extract or validate patch information.
- Redownload to a clean local path if storage or transfer corruption is suspected.
- For authors, rebuild the patch from the correct target and upgraded MSI databases.
