ERROR_PATCH_PACKAGE_UNSUPPORTED
The patch format can require a newer Installer engine
ERROR_PATCH_PACKAGE_UNSUPPORTED (1637) means the patch package is structurally recognizable but requires Windows Installer patching functionality unavailable in the current engine. This is distinct from processor architecture error 1633 and from a patch that targets a different product version.
Windows Installer versions introduced new patch sequencing, supersedence, and servicing behavior. A patch authored with newer tables or semantics may not be safely interpreted by an older engine even when the base product itself installed successfully.
What to establish
- Record the operating-system and Windows Installer versions on the failing computer.
- Check the patch's documented minimum servicing requirements.
- Inspect patch Summary Information and sequencing tables.
- Compare behavior on a fully serviced supported OS.
- Do not bypass the rejection by extracting and copying patched files manually.
- Package authors should declare and test the minimum supported Installer version.
