RPC_S_UNSUPPORTED_NAME_SYNTAX
Valid and supported are different checks
RPC_S_UNSUPPORTED_NAME_SYNTAX is distinct from RPC_S_INVALID_NAME_SYNTAX. The syntax selector can be a defined RPC name-syntax value yet still be unavailable in the runtime or name-service environment used by the application.
DCE RPC defines a name-service API for exporting and importing bindings, but deployments do not necessarily provide every historical name-service backend or syntax. Windows applications that use only endpoint mapping and direct bindings may never need RPC namespace operations at all.
What to inspect
- Identify the specific
RPC_C_NS_SYNTAX_*value requested by the application. - Check whether the software actually requires namespace export/import or can use direct bindings and endpoint-map resolution.
- Do not retry with arbitrary syntax numbers; select a documented syntax supported by the target RPC environment.
- When porting DCE RPC code, audit assumptions about the original name-service backend separately from transport protocol sequences.
The right correction is a supported namespace design or a different discovery mechanism, not a change to the RPC interface UUID.
