ERROR_WMI_ITEMID_NOT_FOUND
An item selector is invalid, not necessarily the instance
A WMI single-item request identifies a block, an instance, and an ItemId. This status belongs to the last step: the provider recognized the block and instance but does not expose the requested numeric data item. It is not the same as a provider-set failure, where a supported item was found but the requested update could not be completed.
The item ID is part of the WMI data-block contract. Consumers must not infer it from a display name or reuse an ID from a different block revision. Providers that process WNODE structures directly must also validate the declared item size and offsets before interpreting the incoming value.
Useful evidence
- Record the GUID, instance selector,
ItemId, data size, and provider version in the same diagnostic event. - Compare the consumer's expected schema with the currently registered MOF and binary layout.
- Reject an unsupported item before attempting any state change; retrying with the same identifier cannot make the item appear.
