What does Windows error code 4333 (ERROR_CLEANER_CARTRIDGE_SPENT) mean?

ERROR_CLEANER_CARTRIDGE_SPENT

The cleaning cartridge has exhausted its allowed uses

RSM tracks cleaner usage separately from ordinary data-media allocation. A spent cartridge can still be present, correctly identified and stored in the reserved cleaner slot, but it should no longer be selected for another drive-cleaning cycle. This differs from invalid-cleaner, where the media is not recognized as suitable cleaner media at all.

Replace the cartridge according to the drive and cleaner manufacturer limits, then inventory or inject the replacement so RSM records the new object. Do not reset the usage count merely to suppress the error; an exhausted cleaner may fail to remove contamination and can produce repeated drive errors.

What to inspect

  • Confirm cleaner usage count and device-reported limits.
  • Eject and replace the spent cartridge.
  • Inventory the replacement and verify cleaner identification.
