Source mode sets describe renderable source formats
Each video present source has a source mode set: the formats that source can expose while the current VidPN constraints are considered. This status is about the source mode-set object itself, not merely one incorrect resolution. The handle can be stale, attached to a different source, or otherwise invalid for the current interface call.
Windows’ VidPN interfaces replace source mode sets when they are updated rather than editing a source set in place. Reusing an old set after replacement is therefore a meaningful lifetime bug to investigate.
Trace the replacement sequence
- Log the source ID, source mode-set handle, and the callback in which it was obtained.
- Verify that a new mode set is assigned through the VidPN interface after enumeration rather than mutating a released object.
- Compare with target mode-set errors; target modes represent output signal formats and use a separate interface.
